Double Vision

Double Vision: While travelling I heard an interesting story on the radio recently.

This particular story was told by Lou Gramm of the Rock group Foreigner. Lou was talking about one night in Madison Square Garden in New York where he had come to see a New York Rangers game. Lou gave an account of how he was inspired to write the song “Double Vision”. He says that the song was written in about late 1977 just before the Double (dual) Vision album came out…apparently many people mistakenly believe that the song was about being intoxicated or high. When in fact the inspiration behind the song came when Lou Gramm was at the Rangers game and he witnessed a player from the Philadelphia Flyers take a run at Rangers Goalie John Davidson, the collision knocked Davidson down and he was subsequently taken out of the game because he was experiencing double vision.

There is a discrepancy here between Lou Gramm’s memory of the account and the New York Rangers website, the incident actually occurred in April 1978 during a game between the Rangers and the Buffalo Sabres. Lou Gramm said that he had never heard the phrase double vision and because of the game announcers repeated use of the phrase this is what inspired him to name the song and the album “Double Vision”.

The single “Double Vision” is from Foreigner’s second album of the same name. The song reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for two weeks in 1978. If anyone is wondering John Davidson has since recovered and is no longer experiencing duel vision. Davidson retired from NHL hockey in 1983, and on May 17, 2019, he was named president of the New York Rangers.
