This Day In NHL Hockey History Ryan Smyth of the Edmonton Oilers scored a hat trick, and Tommy Salo registered his 18th career shutout as the Oilers defeated the St. Louis Blues 3-0. Smyth became the first player in National Hockey League history to record all three goals in a 3-0 shutout twice in his career.
Ryan Alexander Borden Smyth (born February 21, 1976) is a former professional ice hockey player. Smyth played 19 years in the National Hockey League. He played mostly for the Edmonton Oilers. He played for three other clubs the New York Islanders, Colorado Avalanche, and the Los Angeles Kings. Smyth retired from the NHL on April 11, 2014.
Smyth was drafted 6th overall in 1994 by the Oilers. Over the course of his career, he quickly became a fan favorite, as he was known for his tenacity and dedication to the Oilers organization. Smyth was a power forward who played with a high level of emotion. This was never more evident than when he was traded to the Islanders after failed contract negotiations in 2007. After tours with the Islanders, Avalanche, and Kings, the Oilers brought Smyth back home to Edmonton on June 26, 2011, where he finished his career with the team he loved.
