The National Hockey League awarded Seattle an expansion franchise in 2018, and ever since, fan anticipation has been reaching a fever pitch. The team won’t begin to play until the 2021-2022 season. Seattle has had plenty of time to come up with a unique name for the new franchise. In that time since 2018, the name “Kraken” kept coming up time and again.

According to Amazon Web Services CEO Andy Jassy. A part-owner of the team said that the team looked at over 1200 potential names for the team; in the end, the team settled on five finalists. Motion Picture Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and part-owner of the team were instrumental in providing a team name. He is widely known for his Pirates of the Caribbean movies depicting the legendary sea creature “The Kraken.”

Former NHL Star and Team general manager Ron Francis was on the branding committee, and his influence was considerable in respect to his extensive hockey background. Francis stressed, “This needs to be a sweater that when the players put on, they feel really proud. It needs to be iconic. It needs to be noble.”

As a nod to Seattle’s former hockey team the Seattle Metropolitans, the “S” is to commemorate the original team.

Seattle hasn’t had a professional ice hockey team since 1924. The Seattle Metropolitans won the Stanley Cup in 1917, defeating the Montreal Canadians 3-1 in games, making them the first American-based team to win the Stanley Cup. In 1919, Seattle again made NHL news when they once again faced the Montreal Canadians in the Stanley Cup Final; the Series was canceled that year after the fifth game because of the Spanish Flu Pandemic. Seattle made the Stanley Cup Finals one more time in 1920 when they faced off against the Ottawa Senators, losing the series 3-2 in games played.
