TED TALKS HOCKEY

Only Pro Hockey (NHL) Defenseman To Score 5 Goals In A Game?

Pro Hockey (NHL)

In the 107-year history (1917-2024) of the NHL, no defensemen have ever scored five goals in a game, except for one. It happened on February 2, 1977, in a 9-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

Not that this record isn’t impressive enough on its own, but what makes it even more outstanding is that the defenseman that set the record scored it on two different goalies and scored five goals on five shots. The first two goals were tallied in the second period, and the other three in the third. Two goals were scored on Ed Giacomin and the other three by Jim Rutherford.
