This Day In Hockey History March 12, 1972 NHL Gordie Howe Retired

This Day In Hockey History On March 12, 1972. Detroit Red Wings retired Gordie Howe’s jersey #9 in a ceremony at the Olympia, in Detroit.

Born March 31, 1928 in Floral, Saskatchewan, Canada. Known as “Mr. Hockey” is arguably the most famous NHL hockey player of All-Time. At the time of his retirement he had amassed 801 goals, 1049 assists, and 1850 total points over the course of his illustrious career. The only player to surpass these totals is, you guessed it Wayne Gretzky (more on him another time).

Mr. Howe played for the Detroit Red Wings and Hartford Whalers of the NHL. He also played in the WHA for the Houston Aeros and New England Whalers, he also had a stint with the Detroit Vipers of the International League where he played one shift, making him the only player to play in parts of six different decades.
