Toronto Maple Leaf Defenseman
Forty-Five years ago on February 2, 1977, Ian Turnbull of the Toronto Maple Leafs made NHL history when he scored five goals in a 9-1 home win against the Detroit Red Wings. What made this night extra special for Turnbull is that he scored all five of his goals on five shots also an NHL record.
The first period was scoreless. Then at 1:55 of the second period, Turnbull scored the first goal of the game and the first of what proved to be history in the making. Turnbull scored his second of the game unassisted at 10:26 of the second period putting the Leafs up 5-0 heading into the final frame. At 4:58 of the third period, he scored again netting a second unassisted goal and a hat trick. At 16:18 Danny Grant scored for Detroit breaking the shutout bid. With 2:50 left in the game, Turnbull did what no other player has done in NHL history, he scored two more goals, one at 17:10, and capped off his history-making five-goal night with his fifth tally on five shots with a goal at 18:30 to seal a 9-1 victory. After the game, all he had to say was “It was one of those nights where things happened to click“. Turnbull”s victimized Ed Giacomin for two goals and continued his assault with three more tallies against Red Wings goaltender Jim Rutherford.
Scoring five goals in one game is a monumental task and extraordinarily impressive for a defenseman. The feat has been accomplished 63 times in NHL history, by 47 players. The first time it happened was on December 19, 1917, when Joe Malone of the Montreal Canadians turned the trick in the first NHL game ever played, Malone had company that night as Harry Hyland of the Montreal Wanderers scored the new league’s first hat trick that night and five goals in a game to match Malone’s effort in a 10-9 win over the Toronto Arenas. Hylan scored 8 goals in a game against the Quebec Bulldogs in 1912-13 before the NHL era. In addition to this Malone would go on to accomplish the feat four more times in his career, including an NHL record seven goals in a game. Overall Malone scored five in a game three times, one six-goal game, and one seven-goal game and he did it all in his first three NHL seasons. Malone is the only NHL player to score five goals in a game with two different teams, having done it three times with the Montreal Canadians and twice with the Quebec Bulldogs. The latest player to score five in a game is Timo Meier of the San Jose Sharks who joined the list on January 17, 2022, in a game against the Los Angeles Kings. Meier scored five goals by the end of the second period, narrowly missing an opportunity to equal or surpass the mark set by Darryl Sittler of six in a game. No player has scored six or more goals in a game since Darryl Sittler of the Toronto Maple Leafs did it in a game against the Boston Bruins on February 6, 1976. Mario Lemieux is the only player to have ever scored five goals in a game in five different ways. On December 31, 1988, in a game against the New Jersey Devils he scored an even-strength goal, a power-play goal, a short-handed goal, a penalty shot goal, and an empty-net goal. Wayne Gretzky’s most memorable five-goal game was when he scored five in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers to make NHL history by scoring 50 goals in 39 games.
