Keith Aulie (Pride of Rouleau)
NHL Player Profile: Keith Aulie (born June 11, 1989) is a Canadian ice hockey player. Keith Aulie plays with EHC Munchen in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). Keith Aulie was drafted 116th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Keith played his junior hockey for the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League after being selected in the first round of the 2004 (WHL) Bantam Draft. He was the League’s Top Scholastic Player in 2007, winning the Doc Seaman Trophy.
Keith began his WHL career during the 2005-2006 season playing for the Brandon Wheat Kings; at the season’s end, Keith would total two assists in 38 games. The following season, 2006-2007, Keith played 66 games totaling 1 goal and eight assists. Keith would play two more seasons for the Wheat Kings before playing in the AHL. Keith played one season for the Abbotsford Heat and the next two seasons after the Toronto Marlies.
International competition
In 2009, Aulie was named to the Canadian World Junior Team. He was paired on the blue line with current Vancouver Canucks defensive specialist Tyler Myers. Together, they helped Team Canada win a gold medal. The media dubbed him and teammate Myers the “Twin Towers” because of their height, Aulie at 6’5″ and Myers at 6’7″.
National Hockey League
Aulie never played NHL hockey for the Calgary Flames. Instead, the Flames traded his rights to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a deal that saw him in a package that included Dion Phaneuf and Fredrik Sjostrom for Matt Stajan, Ian White, Niklas Hagman, and Jamal Mayers. After the trade, Aulie was sent to the Marlies, playing in five games before being sidelined with a season-ending injury. Keith would play the following season for the Marlies, appearing in 36 games and registering three goals and six assists. Keith took to NHL ice for the first time when he skated in a regular-season game against the Vancouver Canucks on November 13, 2010. Keith played 40 games during his inaugural season in the NHL, collecting two goals and 32 penalty minutes and a new moniker. He was dubbed “Muhammad Aulie” after his first NHL fight against Scott Hartnell of the Philadelphia Flyers. He scored his first NHL goal on March 9, 2011, against the New York Islanders. He was traded again in 2012 to the Lightning for Carter Ashton. He signed with the Oilers as a free agent in 2014 but played only 31 games before being waived and assigned to their AHL affiliate, the Oklahoma City Barons. He left North America in 2015 and joined EHC Munchen, where he has been a regular member of their defense corps ever since.
Aulie would bounce back and forth over the next several years, playing for the Maple Leafs and their AHL affiliate, the Marlies. He also played parts of three seasons for the Tampa Bay Lightning and a 31-game stretch for the Edmonton Oilers. He is still active in Professional hockey, playing in Munich, Germany, for Red Bull Munchen of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL).
Although I live in the same town as Keith Aulie (Rouleau, Saskatchewan), we have never met. Keith is known as a celebrity around town and a local hero as he is responsible for saving his father’s life, Bill Aulie, whom he saved from falling through the ice with his tractor while clearing snow off a frozen dugout in December of 2006.
Keith is now retired from hockey. He works with his father, Bill, on the family farm in Rouleau, Saskatchewan. He has built himself an impressive house right next to the family farm. He coaches minor league baseball with the local children.
On a few occasions, I have met Bill Aulie and have found Mr. Aulie to be quite friendly and engaging. He is often found riding his horse around Rouleau, as I ran into him tonight and informed him that I would like to write about his son, Keith Aulie. It is also worth noting that Bill and Karen Aulie are on the Hockey and Hearts Committee.
Hockey & Hearts is a volunteer non-profit organization that raises funds to help rural communities. Bill Aulie hosts it, and it supports causes that matter to families in Southern Saskatchewan. https://www.hockeyandhearts.com/
