On This Day in hockey history, May 25, 1989, The Calgary Flames beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-2 to win the 1989 Stanley Cup. It was the first time since 1928 that the Canadiens lost the Stanley Cup Finals’ final game on home ice; the last time it happened was against the New York Rangers at the Forum against the Montreal Maroons.
Along the way to Calgary’s first Stanley Cup in franchise history, the Flames would defeat the Vancouver Canucks 4-3, the Los Angeles Kings 4-0, and the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1.
