Manon Rheaume
Player Profile: Manon Rheaume Manon Rheaume (born February 24, 1972) is a retired Canadian ice hockey goaltender.
Rheaume is best known for playing NHL hockey with the Tampa Bay Lightning; she appeared in preseason exhibition games in 1992-1993. Her playing days spanned five years, playing in professional minor leagues, playing with seven teams, and appearing in 24 games. She played on the Canadian women’s national ice hockey team. She won a gold medal at the IIHF Women’s World Championship in 1992 and 1994 and a silver medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics.
Rheaume’s introduction to the NHL came in 1992 when she tried out for the Tampa Bay Lightning. This was a big deal when she became the first woman to ever play in the NHL competition. She played one period in an exhibition game against the St. Louis Blues, giving up two goals on nine shots. The following season she played in another exhibition game against the Boston Bruins in 1993.
During her fame, Rheaume was approached by Playboy Magazine for a photoshoot, which she declined. She also guest-starred as herself on the made-for-TV movie A Beachcombers Christmas with former Vancouver Canucks players Tiger Williams and Jyrki Lumme.
In 2015, she dropped the puck in the ceremonial opening faceoff before the first-ever National Women’s Hockey League game.
Rheaume is the older sister of former NHL New Jersey Devils Stanley Cup Winner (2003), Pascal Rheaume.
To date, Manon Rheaume resides in Michigan and coaches Detroit Little Caesar’s under-12 girls hockey team.
